Charger Teams Rally for Conference Food Drive to Benefit Water Street

Lancaster Bible College’s nearly 20 Division III Charger athletic teams came together in February 2023 that was a win-win situation for all involved. From Jan. 30-Feb. 5, the United East athletic conference hosted the “United Feast” food drive.

Participating colleges within the conference, which includes, besides LBC, Gallaudet University, Pennsylvania College of Technology, Penn State Abington, Penn State Berks, Penn State Harrisburg, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, SUNY Morrisville and Wells College.

During the week of the drive, teams from the conference’s member colleges collected canned goods to donate to the local organization of their choice. At LBC, the effort was spearheaded by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), led by President Faith Hammond (’24, basketball, volleyball), Vice President Alyssa Hamilton (’24, field hockey, softball), Treasurer Jackson Whitt (’23, basketball) and Advisor Joy Tharrington (women’s basketball head coach).

“I think this was a great way for SAAC and LBC to serve our community and those in need,” Hammond said. “Our Athletic Department and teams stepped up great in helping bring in cans. It was great to also see the parents and fans take a part in the drive as well, as they brought in cans for the basketball and volleyball games last week!”

The individual Charger teams also had a little friendly competition going to see who collected the most food, but the real winner was Water Street Mission, a local ministry in Lancaster, Pa., that, in response to Christ’s love, joins with His mission “to walk with our neighbors who are experiencing marginalization and poverty, trusting Him to transform lives and restore hope.” To this end, Water Street engages in emergency shelter, residential programs, a community health clinic, food bank, pre-K and kindergarten education and teen mentoring.

Soon after the food drive, SAAC officers delivered 631 cans to Water Street Mission.

Thanks to all the student-athletes who worked on this worthwhile initiative and all who donated. This is LBC!
