From Life Lessons to Life-on-Life Mentorship

Herbie Brown is a household name when it comes to the men’s basketball program and the world of Lancaster Bible College Charger athletics. Brown played in four straight Northeast Athletic Conference Championships, winning two titles in 2016 and 2018. Individually, he ranks in the top 10 in program history for games played, rebounds, assists and steals, while sitting at 12th overall for points scored with 1,331.

Titles and numbers aside, Brown is the epitome of the phrase “bigger than basketball.” After attending LBC from 2014-2018 and known for being a loyal teammate and fierce competitor, he is creating a legacy of servanthood, leadership and hard work.

The culmination of what he learned through his experiences on the court, in the locker room and as a student-athlete in LBC’s Sport Management program led Brown to Baltimore’s 10:12 Sports—a mentorship program that strives to empower young men through the vehicle of sports. Working alongside these men daily, Brown has the opportunity to develop sports leagues, organize leadership programs and help with workforce development. Amid the busyness of mentorship, Brown finds time to give back through the sport that had a deep impact on his life, while also coaching and working with basketball leagues.

When it comes to the impact of his time as a Charger, he is quick to note the importance of relationships. “Men’s basketball has showed me the importance of investing in relationships,” Brown said. “All the core principles of integrity, hard work and an ‘Audience of One’ are things that I apply to my daily life and relay to the young men I mentor.”

As Brown invests in the lives of young men in the Baltimore area for God’s kingdom, there is also opportunity for others to walk alongside him and the ministry of 10:12 Sports, which is named for 2 Samuel 10:12: “Be strong, and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight” (NIV). This involvement can be through volunteer opportunities, sponsoring program events or giving to the ministry in other ways.

Brown’s passion for the game of basketball is strong, but his purpose to develop young men has become even stronger.

“My favorite part of 10:12 Sports is that I get to empower young men and share the love of Christ with others,” he said. “I’m constantly learning new experiences with this ministry, and my heart is forever changed to always pursue spiritual maturity.”
